I am sure more children have been injured from playing baseball than riding in a truck bed at 20 miles per hour in the last 50 years. So I say lets ban baseball and keep these kids safe, we need more kids staying at home playing computer games because it is such a dangerous world out there. Lets deny them all the things we all did in our lives because now it is to dangerous.

You are all anal if you think riding in the back of a truck a couple of blocks, not miles, to get ice cream is dangerous. Seriously, next you will say dont let kids play sports at all because they might get hurt.

i miss the 60,s when it was our american right to drink a fifth of whiskey on a saturday night, hurtle down the back roads , hit a tree and fly thru our windshields.
seriously if laws werent somewhat up to the disgression of the officer wed be living in an orwelian police state where we could all be stopped and searched for any or no reason at all. we would make a huge growth industry out of incarceration and kids would be kidnapped, jailed and held for ransom. then the felony would prevent the kid from working a decent job and contributing to society. its obvious by now that im making light of the farce that america has become.
yep im a bit bitter. i received a 150.00 ticket a couple years ago two days after reading how the state police were on a ticketing blitz to pay for new ticket printing equiptment. having never had a ticket in 51 years i thought a warning would have been more appropriate.

To me it all comes down to the safety of the kids, I think that we can all agree on that part.

I believe the Coach was celebrating his teams win and without thinking loaded the kids up to go celebrate. I know that it was not done with ill intent or malice. It was simply a celebration of hard work and team comradery.

I also feel as if Officer Richards was doing the job he was being paid to do. Regardless if it was part of special project or not and the option to issue a ticket or issue a warning is irrelevant. He observed a law being broken and addressed the situation. I commend Officer Richards for the way he handled the situation. He did not allow the situation to escalate into something that could’ve gotten out of hand.

As for Mr. Harmon, you should be ashamed of yourself for acting so disrespectful in front of those kids. As an adult you should be acting as a role model and showing that even though you don’t agree with a decision that is made, you resolve the issue in a respectable manner. This wasn’t about the Coach getting a ticket or the kids fun being spoiled, it was all about you and your personal vendetta with law enforcement.

I don’t know if any of you remember the situation in February where Ruben Mancillas Jr was under the influence of drugs and attempted to flee from police. If not search his name in the Reporter. Mr. Mancillas covered a good part of downtown before he was caught. Some of the streets that Mr. Mancillas was on that day include: South, Cross, Home, York, St. Clair, Ohio, Sycamore, Green, East, Magnolia, Marion, Poston and Prather. Now this all occurred around 10:30 a.m. which is when there are a lot of games going on. He had absolutely no regards for anyone’s safety that day. He nearly ran down an officer and attempted to ram another. The only thing he had on his mind was getting away. Now do you think he would have stopped before hitting the truckload of kids and risk getting caught? Do you think that he would have stopped to help after running into the truck? NO

It has nothing to do with keeping them from participating in sports/hobbies because of the fear of injury. If your child is not a strong swimmer, do you throw them in deep end of the pool? No, because you know that they could be in danger. You get in the pool with them until your confident they will be okay. If your child is going out to ride an ATV, do you send them out without a helmet? No, you instruct them on how to wear properly wear the helmet and allow them to ride. It’s not about keeping them participating in life, it’s about ensuring their safety while they do it.

im4iu I see a pattern with you, your dialect is very limited. Almost that of a grade school student. As I read your past comments, the word "joke" seems to appear frequently. I might also suggest if your ever stopped or encounter law enforcement in the city you might as well run, as I see your sure you will get away. Let me know how that works out for you!

The way I see it our rights are being slowly taken away. When was it decided that government knew more about our health and welfare than we do? If you don't want your child to ride in the back of a pickup then don't let them. It's your right, at least for now. Could they have had an accident? Sure they could've, but they can also choke on their food while they are sitting at your own family table, are you going to outlaw food? Maybe we should just lock our kids up in our homes and put them in padded rooms so they don't hurt themselves. Besides where do we draw the line? What about the motorized wheelchairs that run in the streets of downtown? Do you know how many times I've seen near misses with those? Where are their tickets? I teach my kids to obey the law, but I also teach them to question everything. I do not want to see them grow up and look back and realize that all of their freedoms have been taken away. That is not what this great nation was founded on. That is not what my grandpa and many generations of family members before that fought for. For those of you putting down the coaches and members of the little league you obviously don't know what you are talking about. These people dedicate many many hours of their service to give these kids a chance to play baseball and softball. I have no doubt they have only the best interest of these kids in mind. To even suggest that they have done something malicious is completely wrong.

i believe a law was enacted a number of years ago about passengers in the back of a pickup. this should not be news for anyone who drives a pickup. it the drivers responsibility to know and abide by the law. it is just that simple.

all the people who feel sorry for the driver should chip in to pay the fine. anybody??

It is time to recognize that times are different. Pregnant women used to smoke and drink in the 70's too - and the kids of that generation show it. Riding in the back of a truck was 'fun' in 1975 but only the most backward person would call it fun today in the United States. We as a society put protection in place to ensure the average life expectancy is the highest it can be. If you have ever worked a crash scene you would not even argue about 'seat belt rights'.
