The Bush Tax cuts have been in place for sometime. I believe one was passed in 2001 and the other 2003. They seem the norm nowadays.

The current U.S. tax code is so complex and so long I don't know how any C.P.A. or even those employed with the I.R.S. keep up to date with something so extensive. Wiki answers and some other sites state the 2010 tax code was over 71,000 pages, and with new legislation will grow!

There has to be a more simply solution. A flat tax sounds like a great idea. Make the tax code more friendly to small business and those employers that create jobs should get a break. I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that it might be easier for the feds to set a more fiscally responsible budget knowing a project tax income.

Spending does need cut, and a tax system to where everyone pays their fair share. A system where people pay their fair share and employment and economic growth increases would create revenue to cover the costs of the feds without having to raise the revenue on one group of people or the entire populous.

I understand that Europe has their troubles, but I am more concerned with the American people, and what works best for us here.

Best post you've made in a long time, Sunny. I knew you could do it if you kept trying. Way to go, my friend! Keep up the good work.

Ratcatcher,

Well thanks. It seems like a matter of common sense to me. I have to balance my checkbook every week when I get paid. It's simple if you have X amount of dollars...then you can't spend more than X amount of dollars.

I say try the flat tax. The biggest debate would be at what percentage. I've personally spoken with people from all walks of life, and different political views, and surprisingly 90% are for it. This is common folk I am speaking of. I am sure that it would not be a cure all end all right off of the bat, and perhaps may need reformed over a course of several years for different things. At this point though... with our debt and spending... what could it hurt to try?

Now our debt? Can it be done solely through spending cuts? I'm not sure if Romney being elected we will see a major drop in our debt. It so large that it will take time, and a solid non-deviant plan to bring it down.

I'm worried the Chinese are going to want their money back. Becky Skillman had 10 delegates out of the 33 provinces in China today for a meeting on some economic development. The Chinese scare me... we've had Americans give their lives fighting against them in Korea, and fighting against communistic governments elsewhere. I just don't believe we should be doing business with them. I'm guilty, I have products in my house that are made there, unfortunately because I have had no other choice.

I'm thoroughly convinced that America has been and is a Superpower because of our strong economy over the years. Without a strong economy, we don't have the influence, the access to resources, and a global presence that we are used to.

What I want politicians up on Capitol Hill to understand, and I have personally stated to them before, is that you can't serve the interests of the world, and the interests of the American people at the same time. It just isn't possible.

Amen, sister. Amen and AMEN on all points. You should run for office. You would get my vote on a platform like that. Borrowing money from the Chinese is like you or I doing business with a loan shark. We have better sense than that. Flat tax good or we could try no income tax at all and just add a federal sales tax. If Obummer really wants everyone to "pay their fair share" then a consumption tax is the answer. The more money you make the more expensive stuff you buy hence you pay more taxes. Poor people buy used economy cars and rich folks get the new Hummers with the corresponding higher tax payment. Why are the answers so simple for the average joe but so hard for most politicians to comprehend? Frustrating!

It is because the tax code is not about revenue. It's about power and control.

It's mind boggling why they don't understand it. It's about money, whoever makes the most sets the rules for the rest. Lobbyists run the country! Money, It talks, corrupts, and benefits the few that have it. Why should money override the wishes of the majority of ones constituent council? If I were elected to such a position Ratcatcher, I would be tared, feathered and paraded out of the capitol building, as I would have both sides of the aisle raging. There would be a big sign outside my office door stating "If you are a lobbyist, you are not welcome here! Of course, I like most people lack the two biggest things... money and a political party to support me through media and door to door help and such...

These senior politicians from both sides in D.C. have called in their prospective primary winners...now moving on to the general election...last month to "Groom" them! Why do they need groomed? Simple put, they are telling them..."This is how we do things here in D.C." Young candidates become elected and when trying to be idealistic, impressionable, and responsible they are without allies and nothing they attempt can come to fruition. So what do they do? They conform to the standards of their seniors in the hopes to inject some of their ideals into the mix only later to give up, figure out the game, and roll with it. No where in the constitution is the word "caucus" mentioned.

I understand the need of taxes, and I like the benefits and services that they provide. The police, firefighters, city laborers deserve a fair wage, and retirement plan. I like clean streets, nice sidewalks, parks etc... It's a shame that we are seeing cities across the country filing for bankruptcy and actually do have police officers doing their duty for minimal wage... all because of the irresponsible decisions of a few. Those that made these irresponsible decisions probably have their pockets lined!

Tax reform has to happen if we are to return to prominence. Will it ever? I have no clue, and I'm not holding my breath.

Sunny the IRS is the only one that can keep track as they have an employee for each page plus another 30,000 to supervise them. Around 100,000 employees in total. how much do you think that monster costs to feed every day?

Lassiter,
Just wait until ObummerTax goes into effect when the government hires another 16,000 IRS agents to oversee the program. It cracks me up how the admin still says it isn't a tax. Then why isn't the health and human services department overseeing it? Hmmm?

Sunny,

I'll bet the Tea Party would back you. If enough of those candidates made it to Washington and the statehouse then there wouldn't be a need for them to conform and give up their ideals. But there is much work to be done on this front to make that happen.

Whether you call them tea partiers or just conservative Americans who woke up one day and decided to fight for this country they have obviously been successful. Look what they did for Ted Cruz in Texas and Richard Mourdock here at home. In some parts of the country these people are doing more to get idealists/constitutionalists/conservatives elected than the "official" party.

In fact one doesn't need to look beyond our own Morgan County to see this being played out in full color. On Monday night a group of over 50 people calling themselves the Morgan County Tea Party endorsed two exceptional Republican candidates, Bray and Mayfield, and pledged financial and volunteer support for their campaigns. As of 2 days ago the local GOP has not financially supported either one. Why not? Who knows but my point is don't assume the establishment is going to pony up the cash to back someone just because they have the R behind their name on the ballot. It is up to ALL voters, each one individually no matter what banner you march under to do everything you can to help get your chosen candidate elected.

RC,

The problem is, Sunny attacks the "Right Wing" Tea Partiers (like me). She/he made a snide remark in the form of a question to Jim Nicholls asking if he had a tattoo of Joe McCarthy on his butt. That's a personal, denigrating attack. When I responded with an absurd, sarcastic question of my own ("Do you have one of Che Guverra on yours?") to illustrate the absurdity of the attack, she/he labeled me a Right Winger and "fanatical, dismal and uncomprehending".

So, no, I doubt the Tea Party would support someone like that. Besides, if she/he were to run, she/he would have to identify herself/himself. I don't think the people of this country are willing to elect an anonymous person running under a silly pseudonym.

Looking forward to more vitriol for posting this factual information based on direct observation.

Thanks.

Lassiter,

It wouldn't surprise me on the daily operating costs of the I.R.S. I'll probably be sick. Our government gives out grants for the study and development of pickles! Throughout history our elected officials have campaigned on doing away with wasteful spending, programs, and balancing the budget. To what end? Well... our mess today.

Rat,

The Tea Party has good ideals, and has a right to be heard. I can't say that I agree with all of them, but I love the accountability and fiscal responsibility of reigning in the government spending/abuse/fraud. The Tea Party's main focus, from my personal studies, seems to be this area, and that's great! In my opinion, there seems to be too many hardliners on other issues. This grassroots movement seems appealing, but in the end will it just lead to another partisan divide?? Something to think about. Can I vote for a Tea Party candidate? Sure I can, after I have given he/she full consideration, and if possible a meeting.

I will elect anyone with common sense, who has traditional American values, understand the limits of his/her power, understands the TRUE meaning of a representative democracy, makes decisions based on historical and current evidence etc...

I believe in the end of the day most Americans still value our traditions and history. If our representatives would/had listened to the people, and done what the majority of their constituents tell them to do, we wouldn't have the social and economic problems that we have today! I truly believe that! This could have been done without partisan deadlock, the blame game, and storytelling the American people...the sad part is I see people believing what they are selling... Then the Tea Party wouldn't have even been formed or needed. As a representative one shouldn't sell out to lobbyists, corporations, parties, law groups, fundraisers, foreign influence at the expense of those who elected them! I understand why some simply don't vote anymore...I'm not advocating/excusing that behavior, but I can see why.

Don't know if you have seen this but, this guy is one of my heroes. Mike is a pleasure to listen to, and to speak with.

Enjoy

If we could find just one candidate that would be able (or willing) to retain their ideals once in office, it would be great. Over my many years, I have seen pretenders who speak the "change" mantra. It's good for votes because everyone knows how corrupt, inefficient, ineffective, and costly our government is.

The thing is, once in office, those ideals hit the proverbial brick wall because government tends to run on its own momentum. Sunny hit it the nail squarely when she noted that nearly everyone favors going to a flat tax. The thing is, that would make 90% of the IRS unnecessary. Then the opponents would make political hay over the jobs numbers, with all those beurocrats lined up at the unemployment windows.

And she also spoke another theory that might be true, that lobbyists run the government. You can't run the government if you don't get elected, and to get elected you need to raise gazillions of dollars. There's a lot of well-heeled people and organizations with the money, but they all want something in return.

We are not going back to the "good ole days" of colonial America. We've grown up and in the process have overgrown the model, not in terms of structure and form, but in operation and management. You don't run a giant corporation the same way you ran your first mom and pop store.

Oh by the way, the Chick-fil-a day was great! I stood in line 55 minutes, but glad to do it. And it was great to see my Christian brothers and sisters standing tall for someone under Satan's attack.
