Doug,
Regardless of your age, your heart is young and vibrant for truth and liberty. We saw that in the last few months. I didn't know you before; but I'm glad I met you through this forced annexation debacle. This being one of the few good things that has come as a result of said debacle.
Through the raising of hands on Aug 6th, not only votes were cast; but true colors were shown.
I'd like to buy you lunch or coffee sometime (Bob and Jeff, too!).

Doug, Im sorry to see the voice of reason go, Ithank you for all your hard work to stop this annex, you can be very proud of standing up for whats right, thats rare today, most people look out for #1. We need more people like you, hopefully in the next election a lot will change. IN the years I have lived here it has stayed the same. The good ole boys club, I hope the voters will wake up. I have not attended any of the annexation meetings nor followed this subject too closely, unfortunately. However, your reasons for leaving do not seem to jive with some of your comments. "Brave men and women will stand up no matter the size of the opposition, while greedy and weak fall in line, posturing not to be eaten". My parents instilled in me to stay in the battle. The people of this community elected you for good reason. I am saddened to see your resignation. I don't know all the details behind your decision, but unfortunately feel you have just burned a bridge that you spent a long time building. Good luck to you in future endeavors.

Tell me this is a misprint. Thanks to Doug and Price and Strader 550 households will not have their property taxes raised next year a minimum of $400.00 plus and Martinsville will not go $15,000,000.00 in debt. I can understand your reasoning but wish you would have stay on. Everybody needs to pray for Martinsville tonight and not the type you get from a Deckard flunky.

This news is very sad indeed for Martinsville.I think this should remove any doubt as to the Deckards and their minions being a disease for Martinsville.

Doug: Thank you for your dedicated service to Martinsville. It is truly sad to see someone who was willing to stand up and fight for what he believed in resign. It's clearly time to clean house. I would hope that you would consider running in the next election, when all of the rubber stampers could be removed from office as a group.

Doug,
Please consider attending the next Morgan County Tea Party Patriots meeting. I believe a man of principle such as yourself would fit in nicely there. You will no doubt run into several GOP precinct committeepersons and other elected officials that are considered outsiders like yourself that refuse to dance with the chairman or fall in line with the good old boys. Sad to see you give up but I understand there are other arenas you can fight in. Might I suggest the Mourdock or Romney campaigns.

The resignation is sad, but understandable. It sounds very much like the words spoken by Evan Bayh when he announced that he was through with politics at the national level. Staying principled can be extremely difficult in politics at any level. I think Mitch Daniels has also found that out. He had a free ride to the right arm of the next president, and I think we came to the conclusion that it just wasn't worth it.

Partisan politics is more than party politics. In this county, a democrat getting elected to anything is rare. In a way, it is dangerous to have an overwhelming majority, and the danger is that a large plurality can produce a sense of invulnerability. That plays into a notion of invincibility, which can produce bold pride and arrogance.

I was a good friend with a democrat representative in the Indiana House in an era where the republicans had about 60% of the seats. She once told me that, if she was going to get any of her ideas considered, she had to find ways to get republicans to introduce them, no small task. She did quite well, though, planting seeds that germinated in the minds of republicans as their ideas.

I would have personally preferred that Mr. Arthur honor the commitment he made to the office and serve the full term. I do understand the level of frustration.

Best wishes, Mr. Arthur.
