Mourdock tries to explain comments amid national firestorm
read more recent story comments Reader comments| Moose 65 Thursday, October 25, 2012: 2:27 pm More from Moose 65 | We all have our own opinion to the raping of a female or in todays world of a male. The difference being the female may get pregnant. The decision is over 18 the female can decide to carry or not the baby. Under 18 I believe the parents are in the decision. So we all decide if the right course is let this baby live and hope it is healthy or kill the baby. Now God will decide who is wrong and if God decides the baby should not be allowed to live HE will make it take action before it is born and if he doesn't the baby should live. |
| Hugh Jorgan Thursday, October 25, 2012: 4:50 pm More from Hugh Jorgan | I love how being 100% pro-life is labeled as extreme but Obama who supports unobstructed abortions up until the second the child is delivered including partial birth abortions is considered "mainstream". Somethin' ain't right. |
| nobodyimportant Thursday, October 25, 2012: 8:06 pm More from nobodyimportant | Wow Moose. I hardly know where to start. God is not sitting in the Heavens pulling on puppet strings, deciding who should live and who should not. My God is not a micro-manager. He has created and set in motion a plan. He has given us instruction about that plan and has given us the free will to accept or reject Him and His plan. He could make all those decision. He could have created us to love no other god. He could have said to Adam and Eve, "oops, you've messed up my perfect world.....lets have a do-over." Instead, He put the decision-making sqaurely on each of us and is watching to see what we do with it. In His time He will reward the faithful and the rest? well, it won't be pretty. We will all be accountable for what we have done with what He has given us, even our thoughts on this issue. |
| nobodyimportant Thursday, October 25, 2012: 8:12 pm More from nobodyimportant | Oh my goodness. I just read the article. Mr Mourdock can't seem to get his foot dislodged from his mouth. I support his basic premise that we ought not play God by killing a life begun, but when he said, "“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God,” Mourdock said in the debate. “And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” God intended for it to happen? I can't believe he said that. I am absolutely shocked, dismayed, and disappointed. I can only hope that isn't an accurate quote. If it is, he is done. |
| Ratcatcher Friday, October 26, 2012: 8:42 am More from Ratcatcher | “And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” The "it" in the second part of the sentence refers to life which is the subject of the sentence and not rape which is part of the prepositional phrase. Basic english to most educated people. With all the hoopla the left is making over this you would think the man was running for Supreme Court Justice. This country has serious problems that need solved! Why are we talking about this? Because Donnelly and Obama can't run on their records. Of course Mr. Mourdock has struggled with the exceptions of rape and incest. Many of us have. We don't want to put the mother through more torment by making her have a baby to be a constant reminder of an unspeakable act she will probably never forget anyways. But what about the baby? Why should that innocent life be terminated because of the sins of the father? I have a family member that is the product of rape that would disagree with this exception and so would many infertile couples I know that would jump at the chance to adopt the baby. When we struggle we need only to turn to the Bible and see what it says. My Bible says all life is precious. It doesn't say only life created by two people in a loving marriage is precious. I challenge christians to get out and vote and VOTE THE BIBLE. Too many churches today want to make exceptions and rewrite and reinterpret what it says in order to keep people in the congregation making donations. If your pastor isn't stepping on your toes and calling you out on your wrongdoing then you need to find another church. And any pastor that keeps quiet about this issue so as not to offend a pewsitter should think about getting a new profession. I want to be there on Judgement day to hear the excuses Obama and Donnelly give our Creator for supporting partial birth abortions and the killing of babies born alive during a late term abortion. Richard Mourdock is a stronger christian than Mr. Donnelly ever thought about being. He stands on principle and doesn't lie and pander to get votes. His belief might not be the popular one but it hasn't changed just because he is running for office. I have nothing but christian love and respect for this man and will be proud to tell anyone that I voted for him. And if he loses the election because his passionate words got twisted then I believe God has an even bigger purpose for him. Maybe his comments made a woman stop and think and decide not to abort her baby. Maybe his comments will wake the sleeping giant of the christian right...or maybe they already have. If the church shows up at the polls on November 6 then there will be nothing the liberals can do but sit back and watch as our country is returned to it's founding principles of limited government, etc. God has a way of making something good (a baby) come out of something that is bad (rape) or perceived to be bad (losing an election). |
| nobodyimportant Friday, October 26, 2012: 9:48 am More from nobodyimportant | I am appreciative of the lesson in grammar, but whether it is the modifier or the subject, I can't buy the proposition that God would intend for either life beginning as a result of rape or the rape itself. God's plan for procreation is centered in the family and the sanctity of marriage. I will not accept an explanation that God can wiggle on this one and that the creation of life through rape is God's intention. I understand that Mr. Mourdock is a Christian and if there is a thing such as "more Christian", he might walk closer with God than Mr. Donnelly. I am clearly and unshakably pro life. My issues are not with his stand. I said in my original post on this that I hoped it was a misquote, because if it isn't, I don't know what to think about someone who would attribute rape and the creation of life through rape to God's will. |
| voter Friday, October 26, 2012: 2:05 pm More from voter | i dont belive its up to any of us to say right or wrong to a womans choice. thats between her and her god. not for any one else to judge or force there belives onto them. |
| nobodyimportant Friday, October 26, 2012: 6:01 pm More from nobodyimportant | Voter, I thinks it is more complicated than that. We live in a country where we are free to do many things, but at the same time, we are restricted from doing many other things. We are not free to do whatever we want, even to ourselves. Civil law does not always follow God's laws. The true believer in the God of Abraham will always follow the civil laws unless there is no way to avoid a conflict with God's laws. That rarely happens. Even when "ungodly" things are permitted by civil law, the Christian is not obligated to choose that route. There are many instances where civil law intervenes in the life of a person and usually it is because we do not live apart from each other. We live in community and thus have some responsibilities for not just ourselves, but others too. An example is the requirement that we carry insurance on our vehicles. We don't get to choose whether or not we do that and be in compliance with the law. Cyclists wearing helmets is another. Those who cry fould at those kinds of laws fail to recognize the prices that the rest of us pay for those who don't or won't abide by the law. Lastly, and to the point of this issue, the right of a women to choose what to do with her body isn't a decision for her alone. She is exercising her right to decide without input from the life that is within her. Everything we do affects other. Never with so many implications as in these cases. |
| Lassiter Friday, October 26, 2012: 11:09 pm More from Lassiter | Its about the economy stupid! |
| nobodyimportant Saturday, October 27, 2012: 12:22 am More from nobodyimportant | LOL You are right Lassiter. I think Obama figured that out and gave the Republicans something on which to focus with the Libya thing. They are all tied up trying to nail Obama on that and that keeps them occupied off of the economy, which is Obama's Achilles heel. |
