I think this is great, but I have never seen an ATV with a seat belt. I think I am reading this correctly, that a seat belt is required.

The ATV's that have seat belts are the John Deere Gator, Mules, etc.. these are the only ones that I have seen that have seat belts and I think they are optional.

Under the ordinance, an all terrain vehicle is defined as a vehicle that is less than 50 inches in width, has a dry weight of 1,200 pounds or less, is designed to travel on at least three non-highway or off-highway tires, is designed for recreational use by one or more people, has a seat or saddle designed to be straddled by the operator and has handle bars for steering control.

The ordinance sets standards for ATV operation. ATVs must be properly registered with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, have seat belts for all riders, have turn signals and reflectors, and mufflers to limit noise. Anyone operating an ATV must have insurance.

Gators and Mules do not have "a seat or saddle designed to be straddled by the operator" but they have seat belts.

Four wheelers do not have seat belts but have "a seat or saddle designed to be straddled by the operator". I am not sure what type of vehicle they are going to allow on the roads.

If you are unhappy because of seat belts, Yes it is a problem unless you or someone else you know gets killed then who should have made them safer?
Now I don't know for sure if a seat belt makes them more dangerous if you wreck them, but I guess it depends on how they wreck. If you roll it, it may make no difference belted or not. What type of accidents have there been and would a seat belt made a difference? I'll let the experts answer that

Quick rule of thumb is if it has a ROP bar on top then its safer with a seatbelt than without, if not then its more dangerous.

Seatbelts are NOT required for ATV's. You need to read the ordinance. I got a copy from my commissioner. They are required for UTV's or also known as side by sides. The ordinance calls ATV's 'All-terrain vehicle' and what I call a UTV 'Recreational off-road vehicle'. Both are covered under the ordinance.

It states if the vehicle has a safty belt or one is standard equip. then you are required to wear it. Seat belts are not standard equip on ATV's but are on UTV's.

very progressive decision. quad operators pay road taxes as well as horse owners. on a related note ; ill install the latest led turn / stop signals on either for a reasonable fee.
