I don't believe that it has come to that yet. The children could see this as a unsafe place to be and not be able to fully relax and learn. Metal dectator's and better way of screening who comes in and out or picks up the children, yes, guns not yet.

Let's put one more thing to deal with on the ever expanding list for teachers. One incident with a gun being used by a teacher and the outcry would be amazing! Firearms 101 was not in the curriculum for any teacher I know and I haven't talked to any who believe this is the solution! Teachers want to teach and that option is being hampered constantly by state mandated testing! Now you want them to possess and use a firearm! Ridiculous just reached a new level!

@justahasbeen - Thank you for being a voice of reason. The idea that our kids would be safer in a school building with a couple hundred guns holstered on staff members or "securely" locked in a desk drawer is ludicrous.

Out of all the comments where is the solution....I personally don't believe there is any one idea that will further increase safety effectively. If one is ever presented there will be constant disagreement with a solution never to be found because everyone knows better than the next guy. That's what is so ridiculous!!!!

If anyone needs to be "protected", it is the teachers from the spineless administrators who have the teachers gagged for fear of saying the wrong thing in class. The whole atmosphere is not conducive to teaching and learning. Never is it more evident than at Martinsville High School.

Although this is a pipe dream it would be nice to bring our military personnel home and let them perform security in our schools. I personally like the idea of having a police officer, whether off duty or on duty to be at the school. They are hired for security at many places and perform it as a second job. Obviously the limitations would be the funding.

My feelings are that not every teacher should be armed, but there are certainly enough teachers with shooting experience, especially in the HS, that a select few having access to a weapon might save someones life. The kids don't even have to know which teachers are armed either, it's none of their business.

A truly sad fact of life is the only thing that will stop an evil man with a gun is a good one.

As a parent of a teacher, I am strongly in favor of this, I have been saying this since the Newtown shootings. If not the teachers, than the principals, which my son, is in school now to become a principal. Seems like in every school shooting, the principal is the one to get shot first as their office is usually near the front door and would be the first one to encounter this crazy person. I would feel so much better knowing that my son or daughter had at least a chance to defend themselves. I know we are thinking of the children here. but we need to think of all the people these shootings effect, the family of the teachers too. If we are worried about the costs, how much is it going to cost to have a guard on duty? Each school should see who would volunteer to carry a gun, rather a teacher, a custodian, a principal, get them the proper training, if they do not already have it, which I would be surprise if some of them already are trained. Please really consider this idea, as a parent, I would feel so much better.

Arming every teacher is ridiculous and will never happen. I do think a plan similar to what the airlines do with sky marshalls would be interesting though. A hand full of teachers in a school district that have the correct back ground and training could be armed. Every one would know that someone in the school was armed, but not know who it is. I have school aged children and I would be OK with this.

I'm sorry, Shirley. I hear your concerns as a parent. But where does this end? Do we have enough people, weapons, and money to insure the safety of students, teachers, and principals? What about at athletic events? Field trips? Concerts?

What about the safety of those same students and staff in their homes, at the malls, in the state parks, on the street? Should they be more safe at school than in those places?

Make the schools fortresses and the madmen will choose other venues. Forever we will be plugging holes in the dike till every person carries an assult rifle to and from the bathroom. Insanity!

Well now, it would seem that an armed guard at Georgia middle school took out a shooter before he could hurt more than 1 person. Tell me armed guards don't work.
