Ratcatcher. I disagree, you can fix stupid, as you so eloquently put it. It' called education. This goes hand-in-hand with question as well as common sense. You're absolutely right, fences are not the answer. So may I ask what then? Should we all stand idly by and let someone die? I think not. Having someone keep an eye on activities around the pond, be it personally or electronically, is not a strange or unusual request. Some parents just don't care enough about their offspring, or selves, to prevent any mishaps from occurring. Can you honestly feel that the importance of life warrants so little care as to not take any steps to prevent it? Surely not. How much money alone do you feel a life is worth? I assure you that any costs to prevent such things would be far less. Sorry Mr. and Mrs. citizen, we are all quite aware that these things happen, and undoubtedly will happen again, but your loved one was just not worth inconveniencing someone enough to prevent any harm or death to them. Sleep soundly my friend. GOD BLESS AMERICA! That is all.

MarkMcdaniel. (Maybe) newsworthy is not the reason this story went unreported. Just saying. GOD BLESS AMERICA! That is all.

Mr. Hasse, thank you so much for your post. You are so right, all involved in this rescue should be praised. Your post proves my points. Misinformation does occur, even in the great town of Martinsville. God bless you Sir and GOD BLESS AMERICA! That is all.

To the Mayor:

My comment about covering something up with the blanket story was an intent at what was called a pun. Blanket, cover up? get it? I care not about this story. Our folks did the best they could. There seems to be a glitch in the cell phone to local emergency responders timespan and not in the response of our local guys. Everyone on this comment chain is talking about everything BUT that. The local guys did a great job. I think there needs to be in inquiry into the delay between the time the cell phone call was made and the time the firefighters got the call. The time from when the firemen got the call to when they arrived at the scene cannot be questioned!! They did well.

The firemen did a good job. I cannot comment on the blanket issue. I do know that blankets should be standard issue though.

Great example of the world we live in today. All lives saved but police and firefighters are getting bashed because rescue wasn't up to someone else's standards. I think we all need to remember the old saying, "any landing a pilot can walk away from is a good one."

Now we have someone suggesting the city doesn't care about protecting the public from this dangerous pond in the park. I guess he wants us to build giant fences around every single body of water in the county. We cannot protect people from themselves. They will dream up some other kind of mischief to get into. In other words "you can't fix stupid". All you have to do is watch YouTube videos to see what I'm talking about. I guarantee some of our kids are watching them and getting ideas.

So should we ban computers now? Fill in all the ponds? How about cars and cell phones because someone was texting and driving and drove over a bunch of children? Ban guns? Where does it stop? We must use common sense. We can't take away the right of one person to enjoy something because another one can't do it responsibly.

Ratcatcher, couldn't someone be put in charge of at least keeping watch. You're right, fences are not the answer. But, the probability of another child going in is a good one. As was stated in another post, children have and will loose a ball or some kind of toy in the pond. And kids being kids will try to retrieve it. Maybe a guardian will be present and prevent it, maybe not. Again as already posted, there are several guards in the pool area, but nobody watches the pond. GOD BLESS AMERICA! That is all.

How much would we have to pay someone to watch the pond?Do you want to add that to your taxes?I say parents watch your own kids especially around water.
