This upsets me that the mayor, his son and son-in-law wouldn't donate their services for the benefit of the city. Two are elected officials for the city and SIL (and his wife)both work for the city. I understand charging a little for supplies but 3%? In the future it should be rotated between area auctioneers to eliminate any appearance of conflict of interest.

The Martinsville report was correct. Deckard and his family are milking this town 10 ways to Sunday. Conflict of interest no doubt. A competitve bid on this would have eliminated all appearances of milking the cow.

Read the Martinsville Report and you will understand.

This was good reporting by Mr. Hawkins

Mayor Deckard should have let the auction out for bid, taken the lowest bid and then the city would have realized a lower amount of money from the auction. Everyone happy with that? Get a life critics. He saved the city money! Where are the congrats?

"Before the auction, Deckard said the auctioneering services were being donated, with the exception of supplies." Clearly this was a lie.

If Mayor Deckard had any part in the decision to auction the property, played any part in the selection of which property to auction, or had any part in selecting the auctioneering services, he is in a clear conflict of interest. The citizens have a right to be represented by ethical people; they have a right to know if their elected officials are corrupt. The State Attorney General should be brought in to investigate.

What a hoot! If the Mayor had bid out the job to the lowest bidder, costing the city more than it did this way, he would have been skewered by some of the same folks for not donating his services. This sort of reminds me of FOX News and MSNBC, picking any tiny flub or questionable decision and blowing it up into a national scandal.

To: Nobodyimportant. You clearly don't understand the concept of "conflict of interest." The Mayor clearly had a potential conflict of interest in this matter. He had the opportunity to defuse the conflict without impropriety prior to the auction. However, when given the opportunity prior to the aution he apparently misled the public by indicating that the auctioneering services would be donated, suggesting an intent to deceive and further suggesting corruption. It doesn't matter whether or not his services would have been the lowest bid. The fact that you support the Mayor in this act suggests you would actually condone illegal activity and further suggests that you may even have a conflict of interest yourself. What is your connection to the Mayor?

Chief, you clearly don't understand the concept of declaring a conflict of interest. I have the same information as you, the newspaper article. The mayor declared "before the auction" that he was donating "his services" That is, he would receive no money for being the auctioneer. It is reasonable that he did wish to incur personal expenses to do this, thus the charges for materials and supplies. Also, he could not donate the services of other such as the helpers and cashier. I'm sure the city or state is capable of auditing the reimbursement for "expenses and materials".

A conflict of interest does not exist if he received no benefit from the activity. I did not suggest that he would bid in an open bidding process. I said that the city saved money by not going to an open and competitive bid process, from which he would have been excluded for a conflict of interest.

I know the mayor not as a personal friend, but in my 31 years of living here and being involved in civic and charitable work.

Well it appears that the great town of Martintucky has stepped in the proverbial doo-doo once again. Of course Mayor Dickus doesn't have a problem with a $3,000+ net pay to (his) auction company. $324.04 per hour for services rendered doesn't seem much of a contribution, (Synonyms: provide, furnish, donate), to me. Maybe Dickus would like to contribute his net profit of $2,592.23 to his beloved town for street repairs. Say Poston Road for example, where obvious corners for repair were cut and possibly pocketed. Conflicts of interest seem to be the standard. OU812 stated, "Those who can, do; those who can't, criticize.", as if to imply that those in power should be allowed to take for themselves, using their corrupt powers to do so should be tolerated. While those of us with morals can do nothing but criticize. That way of thinking opens the door for all other so-called leaders and or powerful individuals to continue abusing their powers for personal gain. Shame on Dickus and all involved in this clear misuse of power. They should all be politically ostracized and made to return all profits to the community. GOD BLESS AMERICA! That is all.
